ABOUT

I’m from New Jersey. People say they can tell.

Short Bio

I’m a writer and producer who explores how humans tangle with science and technology. I’m the creator and host of the recent audio documentary series Tested from CBC and NPR. I’m also the brain behind the "indie darling" Flash Forward podcast about possible (and not so possible) futures. My work has been nominated for an Emmy and an Eisner award, and I’ve covered everything from spoofed fingerprints from a dead guy, to fake tumbleweed farms, to million dollar baccarat heists. I go by either Rose or Reo and my pronouns are they/them.

Longer bio

I'm a producer, host, reporter and writer based in Berkeley. I've dabbled in everything from research on pelagic invertebrates to animations about beer to podcasts about fake tumbleweed farms. These days, I explore how humans tangle with science and technology. I go by either Rose or Reo and my pronouns are they/them.

I'm probably best known for my podcast Flash Forward, which ran from 2015 to 2022 and was named to all sorts of "Best Podcast" lists. In 2021 I published my first book, Flash Forward: An Illustrated Guide to Possible (And Not So Possible) Tomorrows. Pulitzer Prize winner Ed Yong called it “an essential work of imagination and journalism. The book was nominated for an Eisner Award.

My most recent project is a deep dive narrative podcast from CBC and NPR called Tested about the past, present and future of gender verification in sports. It was named a Best Podcast of 2024 by Apple, Vulture and the New York Times.

I have a degree in ecology, behavior and evolution from UC San Diego where I spent most of my time hanging around in the Pelagic Invertebrates Collection at Scripps Institute of Oceanography as an “apprentice curator.” Then I moved to New York City to get a graduate degree in journalism at NYU’s Science, Health and Environmental Reporting program.

I've been a columnist for WIRED, BBC Future and Motherboard, the producer of the Story Collider podcast, the special media manager at Nautilus, the managing editor for LadyBits, an editor of all things animated at TED Education, and a contributing editor at Smart Planet. I also edited the Smart News blog at Smithsonian Magazine, and did a short stint filling in for the Atlantic’s science editor.

In 2016 I helped ESPN's award winning documentary series 30 for 30 launch their podcast. I also reported and hosted two episodes in the inaugural season of the show, one about a death-defying trip to the North Pole, and another about a brazen baccarat heist.

With Meehan Crist, I co-edited the 2018 edition of What Future: The Year's Best Writing on What's Next for People, Technology, and the Planet.

I have also taught science journalism and podcasting at NYU, the CUNY Graduate School, the Banff Institute, and UnionDocs. My work has been featured in the Best American Science Writing anthology. I was a 2016 MJ Bear Fellow, and a 2021 New America fellow, and I've been nominated for an Emmy for the Netflix television show The Future Of.

When I'm not working, I'm either in the studio creating sculptures or in the gym lifting heavy weights.
